Brandneues Soloalbum des ehemaligen MOBY GRAPE-Mitbegründers!

MOBY GRAPE aus San Francisco gehören zweifelsfrei zu den Großen der Westcoast-Psychedelic-Szene der Endsechzigerjahre des letzten Jahrhunderts und müssen unbedingt in einem Zuge mit Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead und Quicksilver Messenger Service genannt werden. Mit ihrem radikalem Mix aus Folk, Country, Psychedelic, Blues und Jazz gingen sie sogar einen Riesenschritt weiter als ihre Mitbewerber. Die ersten drei Alben "Moby Grape" (1967), "Wow/Grape Jam" (1968) und "Moby Grape '69" (1969) sind allesamt Meisterwerke und gehören in jeden gut sortierten Plattenschrank. Von den fünf Gründern der Band kommen Jerry Miller (git), Bob Mosley (bass), Peter Lewis (git) und Don Stevenson (drums) sporadisch noch immer für gemeinsame Aktivitäten zusammen, lediglich Alexander "Skip" Spence, das Enfant Terrible der Band, verstarb bereits 1999. Alle Bandmitglieder schrieben und sangen ihre Songs selbst, sicherlich ein weiterer Grund für die enorme Vielfalt von MOBY GRAPE.

Don Stevenson hatte bereits 2011 mit "King Of The Fools" ein vielbeachtetes Soloalbum herausgebracht. Für sein aktuelles Album tat er sich mit Dane Clark zusammen, seit 1996 Drummer in der Band von John Mellencamp, der auch für den Endmix des Albums verantwortlich zeichnet. Eine illustre Schar befreundeter Musiker unterstützen Don bei diesem Album, darunter auch seine beiden GRAPE-Freunde Jerry Miller und Peter Lewis. Don überließ Dane Clark seinen Platz hinterm Schlagzeug und spielte selbst Gitarre bei den Songs. Und natürlich war sein Platz hinterm Mikrofon. Es darf mit Fug und Recht festgestellt werden, dass "Buskin' In The Subway" ein Riesenalbum geworden ist. Alles was bereits MOBY GRAPE ausgemacht hat, dieses schlafwandlerisch sichere Verschmelzen unterschiedlichster Musikrichtungen, gelingt Don Stevenson und seinen Mitstreitern hier wieder. Folk, Blues, Rock, Jazz - alles ist wieder dabei! Es wäre auch ein wunderbares neues GRAPE-Album gworden. Eine schöne Idee ist auch die neue Version des Titel "8:05", der ursprünglich auf dem Debütalbum von MOBY GRAPE zu finden ist. Eine tolle Platte, die den Spirit der frühen US-Westcoast Music einfängt und in die Jetztzeit trägt. Nicht nachgespielt, sonden von Original-Protagonisten interpretiert. Nicht nur für Neo- bzw. Alt-Hippies unbedingt empfehlenswert!

Das Motiv auf dem Frontcover diese CD gestaltete übrigens niemand Geringere als Helen Hersh, die bereits zur Blütezeit des Fillmore East in New York Ende der Sechziger-/Anfang der Siebzigerjahre für die Plakatgestaltung dieses legendären Rocktempels zuständig war und auch viele Tourplakate von MOBY GRAPE entworfen hat.

Undoubtedly, San Francisco-based MOBY GRAPE belongs to the greats of the West Coast psychedelic scene of the late 1960's and must be named in one go with Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service. With a radical mix of folk, country, psychedelic, blues and jazz the band even went a giant step further than their competitors. The first three albums "Moby Grape" (1967), "Wow / Grape Jam" (1968) and "Moby Grape '69" (1969) are all masterpieces and belong in every well-stocked record cabinet. The band's five founders, Jerry Miller (git), Bob Mosley (bass), Peter Lewis (git) and Don Stevenson (drums) are still sporadically gathering for joint activities, only Alexander "Skip" Spence, the band's enfant terrible , died in 1999. All band members wrote and sang their own songs, certainly another reason for the enormous diversity of MOBY GRAPE.

Don Stevenson had already released a highly acclaimed solo album in 2011 with "King Of The Fools". For his current album, he teamed up with Dane Clark, since 1996 drummer in the band of John Mellencamp, who is also responsible for the final mix of the album. An illustrious band of fellow musicians support Don on this album, including his two GRAPE friends Jerry Miller and Peter Lewis. Don left Dane Clark the seat behind the drums and played guitar on the songs. And of course his place was behind the microphone. It is fair to say that "Buskin 'In The Subway" has become a giant album. Everything that MOBY GRAPE has already identified, this sleepwalking sure fusion of different music styles, succeeds Don Stevenson and his colleagues here again. Folk, blues, rock, jazz - everything is back! It would also have been a wonderful new GRAPE album. A nice idea also is the new version of the title "8:05", which can be found originally on the debut album of MOBY GRAPE. A great record that captures the spirit of early US Westcoast music and carries it into the present time. Not re-enacted, but interpreted by original protagonists. Not only recommended for neo or old hippies!

Incidentally, the motif on the front cover of this CD was designed by none other than Helen Hersh, who was responsible for the poster design of the legendary rock temple Fillmore East in New York at the end of the sixties / early seventies and also designed many touring posters by MOBY GRAPE .
